abuse victims often ‘overreact’ because part of being in an abusive situation is being constantly told your justifiable anger or fear or anxiety is unjustifiable by both the people abusing you and people knowingly or unknowingly supporting them! abusive systems create people whose ability to ‘react’ ‘appropriately’ has been deliberately taken from them as a means of control! you’re not helping by being just another person telling them to shut up! here’s a picture of a cube!!

Someone suggested the response “If you think I am overreacting to <horrifically egregious behavior>, what would be an appropriate reaction?” in an actual abusive (or merely dysfunctional) situation. Preferably with neutral witnesses.

Okay, I probably should have mentioned when I posted this that it was from a satirical Tumblr but typing on the tablet is a pain and my desktop won’t boot. But what the Tumblr is specifically satirizing is the kind of misogynistic bullshit that gets thrown in bushels at anyone who tries to talk about feminism online. They get constantly deluged with WHY AREN’T YOU TALKING ABOUT THE PROBLEMS MEN HAVE and BUT FEMINISM IS ONLY ABOUT MAKING MEN SUBSERVIENT TO WOMEN and never for a goddamn second stop to think that the problems men have are ultimately due to the way our society devalues anything that is marked as female or feminine even if/when it is being peformed by someone who identifies as and is identified as male or masculine. YES men have problems too but trying to hijack feminist discussions in order to focus only on some guy’s hurt feelings is a real problem. I apologize for posting something that made you uncomfortable but I posted it because it resonates with my own experience of derailing and mansplaining.

Sorry for the rant, but this hits close to home.

Mostly what pisses me off at this point is that a) not very many feminists are acknowledging that there are problems for men that arise out of societal misogyny because of the same assholes as in b) there are no spaces for discussing genuine problems for men that arise from societal misogyny because they all get invaded by misogynist jerks

for the last time, Cumberbatch did not play Khan. HE DIDN’T PLAY KHAN. OKAY?! His character’s name is John Harrison and from my understanding and vague recollection, he’s a legit character from either comics or old, old Star Trek. So stop saying they got the wrong guy to play Khan or tagging your pictures of the movie with him as Khan. JFC.

If you want a movie with Khan in it, go watch Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. There’s your Khan. I’m done now.

Well, this clears up a massive point of confusion I had with regards to the whole Star Trek thing. Everyone was SUPER ANGRY about the (apparent, I guess) whitewashing - it did, last I checked, list him as Khan in IMDB but come to think of it I have no idea who updates that - but also there seemed to be a thing where there was some confusion as to who he was actually playing? But a lot of people seemed REALLY CERTAIN it was Khan so…?

My only remaining question is where this really strong conviction that he was Khan came from. Was it something the studio made up? Internet speculation taking on a life of its own?

So I guess I’m still confused, but less so than before. (I thought it was mostly just because I’m really not terribly familiar with Star Trek, but this all just seems really weird.)

Yup, went and saw it. IDK I am just going to label myself as ‘not qualified to weigh in on this’ and leave it alone. Certainly I am not qualified to comment on any finer points especially since I haven’t seen the original stuff.
But also IDK about this version of Khan being the smartest dude ever, since mostly he just ran around and punched people a lot. There was none of the tension of the ‘heroes’ always seeming to be two steps behind the ‘villain’ and then finally triumphing against great odds that, say, Avengers did. It’s kinda boring when you are supposed to have what is I guess a super clever villain and no one is either fooled into truly trusting them or ever really outmaneuvered by them.

From where I stand, which is not having seen it yet, the problem is probably that Abrams etc don’t comprehend what made Wrath of Khan so emotionally successful to the fans. >_> I honestly do not think it is the kind of thing you can just recycle, really. Which is why I am happy to have successfully compartmentalized star trek and jjabrams trek in my mind, so I can probably watch without being unhappy :P
